Osha Confined Space Regulations

The definition of a confined space is an area that has limited or restricted access due to the entrance or exits of the area. It must be large enough for a person to enter and perform a task but is not intended for long term daily use. Anything from a utility tunnel, a boiler, a vault or manhole can be considered a confined space. There are a few rules and guidelines that Osha has set in place to assure safety in any area that is considered a confined space. With these rules being put into action Osha estimates at least 10,000 injuries will be prevented each year.

Osha's confined space regulations state that any business that has an area that is considered a confined space under Osha's guidelines must have a permit if they are deemed a safety hazard that could cause injury or even death. Places such as furnaces and areas where toxic fumes maybe present.These spaces also require that an entry program is used for spots where a permit is needed. This means that only people with who are certified can enter that area. There are certain things that Osha confined space regulations do not require a permit for such as drop ceilings and crawl spaces. Make sure you have a professional check over each spot and confirm if a permit is needed or not. You don't to get fined for not following Osha guidelines or have an unnecessary injury occur and have legal actions taken against you.

Osha confined space regulations states that you must have a sign or signs stating the dangers of that space and any precautions that are to be used while in the confined space. You are also required under Osha guidelines to keep a log of each time a person enters, how long they were in there,what was the purpose of entering the area and what if any equipment was used.

Proper training is required under the guidelines of Osha confined space regulations it says that any person entering a confined space must be properly trained in use of the equipment and any safety procedures that may go along with them. You are also required to either train or hire a team of people that are qualified as a rescue team in case an accident should occur. Be sure that all employees know the proper clothing or safety devices that need to be worn such as body suits,respirators,goggles and gloves. Wearing the correct clothing will help to reduce the risk of injury greatly. Follow all of the rules set up by Osha at all times. It is not worth risking your life or the lives of others just to get a job done a few minutes faster.
